Dear all

Being reading here for a long time, I have learnt so much local knowledge from many names here (Fisheye, thank you specifically). We are excited to be moving here later this year, from Westchester NY. I don't like the term "Transplant", feeling like we are a organ to a new body or something. But guess we will be referred to as NY transplant for a while before I am able to pretend I am local =) (and that's fine. We came to USA 12 years ago from another country, so probably used to being a transplant)

A family of 3 with young boy. So we are not the party type for sure. Will be respectful to others because that's what I want my boy to become.

I am a serious runner: running 50-70 miles per week (unless right after a full marathon). So my questions (after a long winded unsolicited self-introduction) are:

1. what's your favorite running trail near zip code 18301? Either road running or trailing running will be fine.
2. is it safe to run most of the non-busy roads (traffic-wise) when it is dark outside, assuming I have all lights and signs on me to make myself visible to drivers?
3. are local schools track open to public during non-school hours? any good school running track you will recommend?
4. any local running club you would recommend for some weekend long run buddies? =)

Thanks!

Jay

1. what's your favorite running trail near zip code 18301? Either road running or trailing running will be fine. - Not in that area so I don't know but there are plenty of parks and schools in S'burg for running....I have been through S'burg many times over the years I've been living here for shopping, medical, etc., but don't live down there....

2. is it safe to run most of the non-busy roads (traffic-wise) when it is dark outside, assuming I have all lights and signs on me to make myself visible to drivers? - Why would you?? It would be like trying to hike on 5th Ave. in Manhattan with all the nuts out there...both local and "transplants". See above reply

3. are local schools track open to public during non-school hours? any good school running track you will recommend? - Yes there are....not 100% sure but as long as school is not in session I don't see why it would be a problem....

4. any local running club you would recommend for some weekend long run buddies? =) - Try searching here on CD or on Meetup website there are plenty there.....

The McDade Recreational trail runs along the Delaware in Monroe and Pike Counties. Note: It's better not to run along a highway.

Also healthier and your family will be happy to see you come home alive when your run is over....

Thanks for the recommendation. Looks like that will be the main trail for my weekend 20 mile long runs!

Thanks for the tips.

Regarding #2: it is a serious runner's thing: we run in light or in the dark, rain or shine, all based on the prescribed training schedule.. will be smart about it for sure i.e. not running along I80. But some local roads with less traffic normally are training ground. Only concern is that the curving mountain drive may obstruct driver's view so I will be cautious.

Too many winding roads to take that chance when there are so many parks (state and local) available for your purpose and a lot more safer....enjoy though....wish I could go running....getting out of bed is a task for me these days....

For the coldest, darkest part of winter, I suggest investing in a good quality treadmill. I used to jog a lot in my youth even along slushy winter roads. It was foolish.

You can adjust the elevation of a treadmill and get a good cardio workout in a shorter distance. Also, I don't like the elliptical cross trainers that many people now use in fitness centers.
