Thanks, everyone. I'm enjoying watching this little conversation unfold. I agree that Harvey's Lake is beautiful. There are some interesting houses on the market in that area, although it looks like we won't get anywhere near the actual lake in our price range. I haven't been to Tunkhannock but will definitely check it out. I have heard good things about it from folks we know. And I had not even thought of looking in Wilkes-Barre. I like the sound of the renovations that are going on there. I can guarantee you we will be hitting the farmer's market on the weekends. As for West Pittston, can someone tell me how long it takes to drive from there to Dallas? Can you do it without hitting 309 or some other messy road? We are trying to keep hubby's commute to a minimum. That's why we would really like to live in Dallas, but I'll be darned if I can find a house that appeals to me there. All of the pretty older houses seem to have some sort of fatal flaw.

Thanks again for the info.

I think it really depends on what you are looking for. I live in Dallas and I have spent a bit of time driving around the area looking for good fishing spots (there seems to be one every half mile aroudn here). Harveys lake is nice, but unless you are actuall on the lake, I wouldnt pay the higher price for a home there as other areas are just as close to the lake as some of those houses considered to be "in harvey's lake".

I live in Dallas and live on a few acres in the middle of rolling hills, woods, a horse farm and hundreds of acres of nothing but critters, water, and trees. Areas like this seem to be getting harder to find, but as long as you dont require a brand new house there are still plenty of places around that are hidden away and can be had for under 300k. If you arent into the quiet and all the land and just want a nice house close to Dallas and the lake, then you can litterally move anywhere, I would just pay attention to the traffic patterns and avoid what you can if you don need to drive into Wilkes-Barre on a regular basis.
