We want to begin a search for a summer home in the Poconos to be close to our children.

I'd like to know what the crime situation is like in lake communities.

I have heard all kinds of rumors - don't go to the Hideout because it's full of Section 8 renters and gangs.
Don't go to Masthope or Lake Naomi if you're not Jewish. Homes in Emerald lake are always burgled. And weirder comments. Realtors are by law unable to share information that would be useful in making a decision.

We're coming from outside Baltimore, so while it seems that I should be worried about crime, I don't want to jump from the fire pan into the fire.

Thanks so much.

What do your children say, since they live in the area?

I have no firsthand knowledge of any lake communities, so noo comments.

I’d be interested to hear more about this. I haven’t heard of a single place in the Poconos with a distinctive Jewish community (Pine Forest, Timber Tops, and the other fancy schmancy overnight camps don’t count ).

I recommend Hemlock Farms. They have every conceivable amenity and its gates are guarded 24 hours per day.

I live in Hemlock Farms and I can verify. No crime problem, very effective private police force.

Years ago we would get police and fire call reports in the news. Unless we know the people involved and get a first-hand account we get nothing. So it makes it very hard to respond to inquiries like this one.

We live on Paupackan Lake near the Hideout in Wayne County and have had no issues with crime at all. Our lake does not have a gate and I have not heard of any issues in the Hideout, but I don't live there.

I have a security camera and have literally seen no one approach our house in over 2 years. I have heard the further south you go towards Hazelton and Tobyhanna, that the crime is worse. Our permanent house is in Maryland too in Howard County.

I would stick to the lakes in the true farthest north portions of NEPA. As an aside, our real estate agent did not show us houses in more southern communities, but never disparaged them, but I could tell the reason she did not show us them.

There is one in the South that's actually very nice. I know several people that live there and they all like it. Beech Mountain in Drums, PA

Beech Mountain Lakes Association, Drums PA
