We are still looking to move to the Albrightsville region, had a question for anyone that commutes to the Allentown area. How bad is it during the winter months? I plan on taking 209 to the turnpike, the winding roads look like they could be treacherous-any hints to getting through those rough months?

Might be a bit easier for you if you moved to the Saylorsburg region and then hopped onto route 33.
Ice storms can block you in. Just this winter before we headed south.......we were blocked in our home for 3 days.....The ice was 3/4 inches thick and unplowable!
Many people take the route 33 ride into Allentown.
One thing for sure try to be in a flat area of road that goes into the turnpike........
no too far off of the beaten path.

Thats what I was afraid of...we wanted to be in the same development as some friends of ours, but I am thinking that would be asking for trouble weather-wise
thanks for your honesty!

It really depends what kind of car you have? Front Wheel Drive?

I've lived on the mountain and commuted to stroudsburg thru back roads for 5 years. I've done it in FWD, RWD, and AWD cars so i know can tell you it is possible. Drive slow and you wont have any issue at all.

Really the only hard part is making sure your vehicle can make it up and down the mountain. Also they have been talking about an exit/entrance to 476 right on 903. Its about 3-4 miles from albightsville. I dont know when this will get built it could be in 10 years but i have heard talk of it and it is supposed to be coming.

If you want to live in albrightsville, i would not change my mind based on winter.

Yep ... this is the key right here. I drove in snow for many many years and this was my mantra.

Effort is a nice area that is only about 10 minutes from Albrightsville and still convenient to the turnpike and 33..

My husband made that commute for 5 years. Sometimes what would normally take him 45 minutes could take up to 3 hours when the weather was real bad. Many many and I mean many time he would call work cause our roads weren't plowed yet and to tell them he would be a bit late and all he would hear about was how it only rained in Bethlehem.

I did a lot of driving in snow. Once doing a 360 on a curve.........Whoooweeee
Once passing everyone by on a hill in NJ since I had front wheel drive at the time, and the back wheeled drivers could not get up. ( before the abundance of SUVs came along)
Mountains are an issue. Having been stuck on top of one this past winter for three days.........they become the hardship.
I'd rather be driving in a flat area in a snowstorm, anytime.

More reasons why moving to the boonies is a bad idea unless you're retired or will be working somewhere close by. The long commutes with both PA winter weather and the high gas prices would be hellish, in my opinion.

Although, looking at the bright side of a crappy situation, maybe these gas prices will put a halt to all of the sprawl.
