I used to live in Palisades and LOVE that area... you are close to the action of DC but in a residential feel with parks and a few small shops. Have fun with the tour!

Take a drive all the way down the GW Parkway from 495 to Mount Vernon and tour Old Town Alexandria on the way. Might be something off of there that would be of interest.

Wouldnt' be that bad. You could make that nice parkway drive much of the way.

Disagree. My husband used to commute from just south of Old Town to a job in McLean - close to an hour, 45 min on a good day. I think your best locations would be McLean, Falls Church and Vienna. Good luck!

I find it's worth it to live near the water. Also, not so bad if you can negotiate with your employer to work at home some days of the week.

Well, maybe I'll try the commute from there one day and see. Another coworker who lives somewhere in Alexandria says its an hour to an hour and a half. I'll have to find out how close he is to old town.

When you are looking around the DC neighborhoods, consider hopping across Western Avenue into Maryland near the Friendship Heights Metro. The area bounded by Mass Ave/Little Falls/River Rd/Western Avenue gives you many of the benefits of a DC location, but without the dreadful DC school system. And it's pretty easy to take Western around Westmoreland Circle, down the Dalecarlia Pkwy to MacArthur Blvd at Sibley Hospital, right on Arizona, down to Canal and over the Chain Bridge to 123 (much easier to drive than it is to describe) and out to Tyson's.
