Leesburg is nice ( I have friends that live in Leesburg, whom I met through my daughter's preschool)...

I currently live in Ashburn (Broadlands area) Very nice family friendly neighborhood and there are also some single family homes and town homes in your price range. Broadlands is also convenient to the Greenway (Toll Road) to take into D.C. and also to Dulles Airport.

when I say there is a SFH in your price range (there is a 2,790 sq. ft- 4 bd. 3.5 bath) listed around $480,000 in my general neighborhood.

So basically, I would look into Broadlands/Southern Walk in Ashburn also...

Would highly suggest Leesburg over Ashburn. It has a lot more character and you'll get more for your money. Also, the Ashburn crowd is obnoxious with their "my kid is better than yours" attitude and fake, wanna-be rich,gotta-beat-the-jones demeanor.

Wow, really? I've lived in Ashburn for almost ten years and I don't see it. Perceptions can be really misleading and I'm sorry for you.

Well that's not how I am

I grew up in Seattle and was not raised like that..

Basically- what I'm saying is not everyone is like that....

Wow, with only a 2 day a week commute into DC and a stay at home mom w/ 3 kids, you may want to consider western Loudoun, Clarke or Jefferson WV. For $520k you'll get a mansion or spend less than $400k and get a more modest, but still really nice house w/ enough land to enjoy and a MUCH lower mortgage payment. For a two day a week commute, if it's into DC, I wouldn't think twice about taking the MARC train (the stop is one mile from my house here just outside Shepherdstown, WV.) It's a little longer than commuting from Leesburg, but there is no traffic headache. And it's an easy option for a day trip with the kids to go to the museums, etc.

It's definitely cheaper out there but are the houses close enough together that someone would get to know their neighbors? I know some of the communities around Hamilton have a fair amount of acreage which could make it more difficult to meet people or have kids walk to their friend's houses. That and a longer distance to grocery stores. I really like the *idea* of the places in Western Loudoun but right now I need more of a neighborhood feel to keep myself and kids entertained. Someday, though...

We weighed the mansion on the acreage west of Leesburg vs. the neighborhood aspects (smaller, older house on a smaller lot) of Ashburn and chose Ashburn for the neighborhood. The deciding factor was a friend, who had several acres, telling stories of driving her kids from door to door to go trick or treating (oh, and horror stories of well/ septic system issues).

We are moving from Ohio to the Leesburg area. Spending up to $750k and we want a little elbow space being a .5 acre lot. What neighborhoods or other areas close to Leesburg would you recommend are friendly, family friendly and receptive to newcomers? We are really leaving a great community oriented area and we are hopeful the people of Leesburg will be friendly and welcoming to our family! It really is an amazing town!
