Hi:

Any recommendations for Karate or Tae Kwon Do classes in Oakton/Vienna for a pre-schooler? The closest to me is Mountain Kim (Mt.Kim Martial Arts). Has anybody tried it?

Thanks,
K

Most karate or tkd for pre-schoolers around here is a joke.

As is the case with most schools, you will probably find that the "teaching" is delegated to a senior student. I know Mt. Kim does that. That being said, you can be pretty incompetent and still "teach" karate.

There was a Mountain Kim in Sterling years ago and my kid went there (elementary age). I am not sure if it's part of a chain or just a commonly-used title for a martial arts school. She enjoyed it very much and they appeared to have decent lessons, fight techniques, and competitions. But the manager/owner was let's say, a little bit kooky and not quite the businessman. It shut down eventually.

Have you checked out judo classes? As much as I love and advocate for karate, judo has been said to be a great alternative to the punching and kicking arts. What kid doesn't love wrestling around? It would be a great foundation for them as well.
