Greetings!

My husband works in Herndon and I work on Capitol Hill. We're trying to minimze the commute time for one of us and are considering a move to Herndon. I've heard that the rush hour commute into the city and back can be nightmarish. Can anyone give me travel time estimates or examples from their experiences?

Thanks very much!

Liz

We are temporarily renting in Herndon and my husband works in Capitol Hill. Your average commute time driving solo will be 90 minutes, particularly in the evenings. On a good day, it can be an hour. He has never tried taking sluggers or taking public transportation so I don't know how that would work.

I've been avoiding it for years, but the times given above sound right. From Herndon, public transportation now involves, at best, getting to an express bus that takes you to the Falls Church metrorail station where you catch the train to Capitol Hill - a long ride altogether and you might end up standing up for awhile on the train. Good news is that the metrorail is coming out as far as Dulles AP, but that is years away and first it will only reach the eastern part of Reston, still requiring a bus or car to reach Herndon.

If you LIVE on Capitol Hill, the reverse commute by private vehicle or public transport should be faster and more comfortable. However "reverse commutes" are heavy too and people come from all over to reach jobs in all locations in Northern Virginia.

Try commuting likely routes for awhile as a test and see how you like it.

Consider parking in the costs too. In Herndon it is probably free, but not in DC unless you are a big muckymuck and park on the streets denied to the rest of us taxpayers. Of course there are lots of other places to live besides near work and we all have preferences as to types of housing and location to live.

Good luck!

The Herndon to DC commute will be a nightmare...primarily because you can't take route 66 into the District during morning rush hour. You will need to take various "backroutes" into the District just take the beltway to 395 north...

Default Thanks

Thanks for the input! The good news for me is that the evening commute won't be an issue most days, as I generally leave the office after 7 pm. I"m not excited at the prospect of an hour and a half in the mornings, though.

If you don't need to be in the office early in the morning, you might want to leave after 8:30 am and the morning commute won't be as bad.

Agree with the last poster. I live in the area and arranged my work schedule to arrive in DC around 9:45. Leave the area around 8:40, get on HOV on Rt 66 once it opens at 9:00, and if you time it right, you are downtown and at your desk at 9:45.

On the way home, if you leave between 6:00 or 7:00 pm you should be in Herndon in just under an hour.

We currently live in Old Town Alexandria in the Carlyle area. Since I can jump on the GW Parkway at 9 or so and he leaves for work at 6, I've got about a 30 minute commute and he's got a 40 minute commute. The move would give me a 90 minute commute and him a 10 minute commute-- it's a rough trade!

Wow I'd reconsider if at all possible, or maybe figure out a way to keep your current property (like rent it out) while you rent a place in Herndon for 6 months or so to see how it goes. You're in a nice area with 'normal' commutes and you want to relocate to the far suburbs and get a hellish commute? It's definitely something to consider options carefully. Do you already work fewer days a week or can you arrange to work fewer days at longer hours? That's one reason I suppose you taking the 90 min commute would be ok.

Does he go around the beltway to 267 or does he do north to 66 to 267? Has he tried whichever one he's not using?
