Hey there forum goer's .. I need some help.

Commuting question below:

I was recently hired for an amazing internship in D.C.
I have a family-friend that lives in Leesburg. I am moving up to Leesburg within the week and after some research I realize commuting is NO SMALL TASK! Especially on a limited income... VERY limited. Also, my schedule will vary with some later evenings 7 or 8 pm.

Any suggestions?

Currently my plan of driving to the Vienna metro station and taking the metro to the office (with reserved parking at the Vienna station and gas calculated) could cost upwards of $400 a month. However, this allows me a more flexible schedule for commuting times.

Any advice would be awesome.

Is it just me or does $4.5 a day for parking for something you have to also pay for sound a little much?

I think $4.50 per day is parking lot robbery! When I started commuting in 1990 it was $1 per day to park. Personally, I'd find alternative methods to get to the Metro.

Driving from Leesburg to Vienna Metro really doesn't make much sense. Vienna is quite out of the way. If you are going to go in early enough and want to pay for Metro just drive to East Falls Church. The alternative would be drive to Herndon/Monroe and park for free. But that requires taking a bus to the Metro.

There's a bus that goes to the West Falls Church Metro Station from Leesburg. It stops at the following sites in Leesburg/Ashburn:

George Washington University’s Virginia Campus, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Farm Research Campus, INOVA Loudoun Hospital and Beaumeade Circle.

Google the transit authority for more info. They might also have another bus route, too. I vaguely recall hearing about a new bus being added just this spring that connects Ashburn to WFC metro.

Welcome to the area. And yes that commute is a haul. Like others have said, maybe check out Loudoun County Commuter Bus Service (http://www.loudoun.gov/Default.aspx?tabid=785 - broken link)

they have a schedule of all bus routes from the Leesburg/Ashburn area and the new Tysons Corner bus is fairly new, but cheap, takes the Greenway and toll road and has free wifi on it. Not sure if it will be applicable to your schedule, but worth checking out.
good Luck

If it is a government internship, you'll most likely get money for commuting (that's what they did for me for this summer). You can take the bus from Herndon Monroe Park & Ride but it gets really busy coming back. The Loudoun COunty Commuter Bus is nice.. I usually just drive to West Falls Church from Ashburn and take the metro in. The commute sucks big time but for an internship, it's totally worth it. I couldn't do it long term (although I got offered a permanent position) but for a few months it's ok. Have fun!

I've been commuting form Ashburn/Leesburg for the last few months. If I'm out the door by 6 and take route 7, I can make it to West Falls Church by 645-650 and am on Capitol Hill by 730.

On the way back, I'm on at 6ish at capitol south metro and back by 800p. On the way back though, I tend to take 66 west to 28 north. Seems to move faster than route 7 all the way back.
