We've closed on a house in Leesburg (right by Old Town Leesburg) and my job is changing from Reston to downtown DC.

It's an 18month assignment in Washington DC. I believe it's on H street.

What do people think of some of the commuter buses? Is MARC from MD viable? Or am I just gonna be in a world of suck for a while?

The commuter bus is probably your best option if you don't want to drive in. It's pretty nice and convenient. It'll take you 15-20 minutes to drive to Point of Rocks and the MARC train is always delayed. Plus it takes you right into Union Station and you would have to take the Metro to wherever you are going.

And the MARC has to slow down when it's hot.

Oh man, you have my sympathy. Commuter bus is probably your best bet, and at least it's just for 18 months. But I think you pegged it when you said:

As someone who thinks Leesburg is a very lovely town I must commend you on your fine choice for a new home! We were in town recently and were fortunate enough to have randomly dropped in during some sort of lawn & garden expo that was very well-attended. Route 7 is absolutely the most heinous road we drove on in Loudoun/Farifax Counties, as it was congested with back-logs even on a Sunday morning, but otherwise your position in Leesburg orients you near to prime outlet shopping, the Dulles Town Center Mall, and the wineries about ten minutes to your north and west outside of town.

I'm admittedly no expert on commuting in the area (yet) so I'll just defer to others who have already given their advice in that regard. What I can tell you though is that if you plan on making Leesburg your permanent home you'll have a much easier commute into DC once the Silver Line of the Metro is extended out deeper into NoVA in about another 5-6 years.

Good luck!

Another vote for the commuter bus. For me in Ashburn (from the Dulles North lot), it's about a 1 hour 15 minute commute, including getting to and from my house to the bus stop. Depending on your company you may get reimbursed for public transport, too.

My husband takes his motorcycle in, rain or shine, although his early hours coming and going sort of negate the need for his use of the bike. Depending on your hours (the earlier the better) it may not be so bad to drive.

Good luck.

Add mine to the list of votes for the commuter bus. My DH used to take it and it really wasn't that bad (in the grand scheme of things). I'm sure you'll be fine, especially since it's just 18 months.

Driving into DC from anywhere in Loudon will be long, difficult, expensive, and depressing. Save your sanity...take the bus. Read...sleep...ponder how little time 18 months really is in grander scheme of things...
