Appreciate the advice and good links. The FL neighbor does complain incessantly about VA public services. She has begun making remarks about "immigrant" neighbors, questioning their legal status. She recently filed a complaint with the Fairfax County Police, accusing a Hispanic man of harrassing her. He did not, as I witnessed the event and provided a statement to police attesting to this. My story corraborated with another persons.

I suggested to the Condo board that we add language to the docs along the lines of "automobiles parked or garaged on the property longer than 60 days must comply with city, county and state registration laws," etc. There are many in the community who are tired of this person, so it's more of a collective action.

From what you've said, I'd wager that she may have more problems on her federal income tax form than with the local property tax.

Isn't it ironic that she is indignant when she believes others may be breaking the law?

Her situation is more extreme than this one but it reminded me a little of the time when DH and I lived in a high tax/good school suburb in another city. We never had kids, but dutifully paid our taxes like most people. Neighbors and Realtors often made comments about how people without kids, singles, etc., should be happy to pay the taxes because the whole community benefits from good schools. But when we were selling our house, it was very common to get comments like "we've lived in ____ all our lives, raised three kids here. But we're undecided between buying another house here, and moving out to ____, because our kids are grown now, so why keep paying the high taxes here?" Hey, folks, your kids got the benefit of OUR taxes - where is that good ol' community spirit now?

Just in case you had not thought of this: if she is a military member, it would be entirely proper for her to keep her Florida residence for tax and auto registration purposes.

A couple of you obviously can't see your own hypocrisy. It's wrong for one person to question the immigration status of a potential law-breaker, but it's right for you to turn around and question the tax status of this other person. Both are based on assumptions, but it's okay when you do it.

Ah, I see. If a Republican is a tax scofflaw, it's "Release the hounds," but if a Democrat is (I'm looking at you, Senator Kerry), then it's, "Nothing to see here, move along."

She's not military, but that's a good question. I come from a military family and would have known to consider that. She's a hyprocrite and a mean person.

Honestly, if word got out you were the rat, my guess is that you would end up looking worse for it and the awful neighbor would gain more sympathy. People in the U.S. hate paying taxes, vigilantes, and nosy neighbors sticking their nose in other people's business, just as much as they don't like tax cheats.

I would just use the info as an additional weapon for some good ol passive aggressiveness. Whenever she annoys you just shift the conversation to something like you heard that DC was going after DC socialites who falsely use VA residency to avoid having to pay the high DC income tax. Isn't it a shame those liberals are depriving the poor children of the funds to fix their school? Or something like that.

If the immigrant in question had bragged to her that s/he were in the country illegally, providing evidence of law-breaking, and as a result the neighbor was paying more tax or experiencing some other problem, then the situations might be comparable.

If you had a friendly neighbor you adored, would you turn her in? It seems to me this is less about breaking the law and more about personal feelings. That said, as a rule follower, I get sooo annoyed with rule breakers, so I can understand where you're coming from.
