Thank you all SO So much for your help! It's a beacon that has made the vast fog of NOVA regions a bit less mystifying. I love this site! Thanks again, Kathleen

Like others here have said, NoVa is suburban sprawl central. Here's a thought: get a 3 BR condo close to work and a second home in a hip, trendy, faraway place that you can visit on the weekends.

Might be carrying things to an (expensive) extreme, but the point may be good. You can only really do one thing at a time, so the notion of "home" as an HQ from which you can easily get to work, amenities, and the pleasures of your choice is a good one.

The Vienna area would be a good one on that score. The town actually is a town with it own local goverment and festivals and so forth, so it has a town feel to it. Most of NOVA has no local government below the county level. Vienna is close to 66 and 495, it has two nearby Metro stops (DC in 30 minutes or less), the W&OD Trail goes right through the center of town, there is Jammin' Java if you like live indie music seven nights a week. Very close to Tysons or Fair Oaks for shopping. Excellent schools and parks, and of course Wolf Trap for shows and concerts or Meadowlark Gardens for a quiet afternoon of communing with nature. Lots of good restaurants in and around town plus about every service you could possibly imagine. Does your cat need a cat-scan? No problem, Vienna has an imaging center just for pets. True that $600K won't get you the top-of-the line, showcase homes in Vienna. The housing slump has not had as big an effect in this area as elsewhere, but it will get you into a perfectly good and comfy home in a nice neighborhood with no problem at all. It'll be tough for other places to stack up if you're working in the PanAm/Fairfax Circle area.
