Is it practical to drive to an Orange line Metro stop from the Reston/Herndon area? I will be working at EPA HQ.

It's a very decent option. The Federal Triangle station (Between Constitution and Pennsylvania Avenue) is on the Orange line a little past Metro Center.

The estimated travel time is 31 minutes from the Vienna/Fairfax-GMU station which is the closest station to Reston, and will cost $3.60 one-way for a regular fare and $2.35 one-way for a reduced fare.

Depending on where in Reston-Herndon you live, you can probably drive to the Vienna station in around 20-30 minutes by taking Lawyer's Road to Maple Street (RT 123 in Vienna) and then Nutley Street to the station. Total time should be around an hour which sure beats driving in traffic to NW D.C. in rush hour traffic from Reston and you won't have to worry about the hassle of parking in D.C.

The parking fee at a Metro Station is usually around $3.75 for the day.

Thanks for the quick reply! I am real familiar with the Metro since I lived in Falls Church for a few months. I would take the EFC to Farragut West to go to Interior. Gotta love those gov't transpo subsidies. I just wasn't sure if there was an easy way to drive to one of the stations.

Depending where you live, some of the park 'n ride areas may be free parking. You would then pick up a bus, such as the Fairfax Connector, to WFC metro. Depending what time of day you commut to work, the metro parking amy be at capacity.

Catch the bus off of FFX County Parkway/Toll Road. That'll shoot you to Falls Church for a ride on the metro.

Default Reston to Ballston

I want to take the Metro from Reston to Ballston station. Isn't parking in Vienna a real problem to drive there and pick up the orange line? If I decided to use public transportation the entire route any idea which bus I would pick up in Reston and where would be the best location to either go to the Vienna or West Falls Church station and then on to Ballston. Also which station is the better alternative? I am so new to this commute. Thank you

Fairfax Connector Buses serve Reston and go to the West Falls Church Metro Station - from there you will take the Orange line to Balston. The specific bus to take depends on where you live in Reston (551, 552, 553, 554, 557). There is also a park and ride at Town Center Parkway and Sunset Hills (505 and 555). Details on the Fairfax Connector website.

Pick up bus 980 from the Herndon/Monroe Park and Ride and ride it to the West Falls Church Metro. Parking is free. Takes about 25 minutes.

There are bus stops along most of the major routes in Reston (they aren‘t all listed on the map) so you might be able to avoid driving altogether if you like. Might be good idea to pick up the bus at the park-and-ride until you know the route. For me the total trip on bus & rail (Reston to Metro Center) is usually under one hour. If there is bad weather or a traffic incident, then it takes longer, but even more so for drivers on the non-HOV part of the toll road.

Also, you can use a smart trip card on both the bus and metro rail-

I forgot to add the Fairfax Connector 585 bus that services the reston south park and ride at the corner of Lawyers and Fox Mill.
