I can't help (yet) with the relative merits of different high schools, but I can help with some of the geography. The line between Oakton and Vienna can be flexible and irregular, so you might find homes listed in each area that feed to the other's home high school. Some parts of what would be called Oakton feed into Madison High School, and some places with Vienna mailing addresses feed to Oakton High School, including the school itself.

So if you decide you'd rather have your kids attend Madison, there are homes that might be listed as Oakton that will feed to Madison rather than Oakton High School.

I don't ever take 29 inbound, but I have found that I have to wait until 10 or 10:30 for 66 to clear up. There seems to be a second rush hour once the HOV restrictions are lifted, and in my experience, it is even heavier than the rush hour during HOV hours.

Honestly, I think $2k/month is a little low for the amenities you're looking for. We pay about that, and we certainly don't have an updated kitchen or master bath (heck, we only have 1 bathroom, and it's tiiiny).

I agree that $2000 is low for a house with those amenities - at least here in Vienna. It *might* get you an old 3-bedroom, 1 bath rambler with a shed, but not a garage or fixed up bath or kitchen. With that rate, I would look in Centreville or maybe somewhere else. At least with renting, it's only for one year, and you can always move if it doesn't work out.

On the other hand if you moved to PW County - you'd find a home for $2,000....but that would definitely add to your commute. We have huge carriage homes in our neighborhood that rent INCREDIBLY fast and they were going for about $1700....so I'd assume that the regular homes were going for a little more. The community is with .5 miles of the VRE but that doesn't help you with your commute to Oakton at all.

Lots of schools slated to open in Prince William County. Might be worth it to take a look. Husband could take the VRE

Boundary map for James Madison HS for the 2010-11 school year.

Which area do you live in? Just curious. Thanks!

We have decided that Centreville is definitely the best location for our family and we are finding very nice TH's for anywhere between $1,750 to 2,100, which will work for us. My commute to Oakton would take place around 7 a.m. so I am now wondering what Lee Hwy is like around that time. My return home would be around 3:30.

You will love Centreville! I have been here almost a year now (moved from Herndon after a year) and love it.. the location cant be beat! I live in Faircrest there are plenty of townhomes for rent but they go quick most of the Townhomes are $2k a month plus but are newer. Also keep in mind some homes in Centreville feed into Westfields High School not Centreville High School and another thing to mention there are nice Townhomes in Little Rocky Run with a Clifton address that is "really" Centreville. Welcome to Centreville!
