An interesting Kudzu distribution map-

kudzu (Pueraria montana) - EDDMapS County Distribution

They might need to do a little data cleanup on some of the records in northern states. USDA zone 6 seems to be close to the limit.

The leaves are about 2" across. It also has a certain smell to it. On the other side of the yard I've got some smaller vines in a lighter green where the leaves are about 1/4 to 1/2" across. Same thing?? And that's only what I've paid attention to. There's probably more. I'm in southern Culpeper Co. Can anyone post a picture? I'm not set up to.
This is a pretty good picture of the flowers...they can be almost all purple, almost all white, or a mix...

The leaves can also vary in size (up to four inches in diameter) and shape (lightly-lobed to almost round), but that unique structure of the runners and leaf nodes is very clear in this picture also. If you've got stuff that looks like this, better get to ripping and digging it out. Sooner would be better than later.

There's a group in South Carolina - KOKudzu - that has been experimenting with non-herbicide methods of removing kudzu. Here is a list of their experiments, and their summary of how to get rid of kudzu based on what they've found.

Nope, that's not what I've got. Whew! Looks nothing like it. Guess it's just another batch of weeds. I took a closer look and the flowers are blue, no purple. At least I know what to keep an eye out for. Thanks.

Congratulations! But if you have some spare time, you could still come over and help us out. Our stuff looks just like that. Nothing like first-hand experience, you know...

Thanks for the invitation, but I've got 4 acres of mostly woods that I should start checking out now that I know what I'm looking for. I've only looked at about 1/4 acre so far. Maybe next time.

Good point. They won't be woods for too long if kudzu takes ahold of them. The stuff will keep growing and growing and growing until it denies sunlight to every other plant/shrub/tree in the area.

Kudzu is useful to humans as food and medicine, including thousands of years tradition in China as a prevention for alcoholism. So we might as well join the deer in turning this crisis into an opportunity!
