In terms of overall reputation, I'd put the top 5 as:
UVA
W&M
VT
Washington & Lee
University of Richmond

The next 5 are just a notch below and pretty close:
George Mason
Mary Washington
JMU
VCU
ODU

Even when you're applying for those first jobs, how well you performed and how well you interview will probably count for more than the name of your school. Recent studies indicate that success in careers is probably more dependent on the student than the school he/she attended.
Agree 100%. I've been on a hiring panel, and to be honest, I couldn't care less where someone went to school. I care about whether they can express themselves clearly and within the rules of standard written English. I care if they have a sense of humor and a sense of humility. I care (BIG TIME) if they are courteous.

There are plenty of idiots at great schools, whose daddies gave the school a lot of money. But I suppose you can't help but think about school prestige, given the investment. And not everyone thinks the way I do.

On the other hand:

I myself got my degree from a blah state school (in another state) after transferring from a better school. There was definitely an overall lower level of intellectual discourse. I remember an advertising class group project in which I dared to suggest we use the word "amenities" in a car advertisement--and the other members of my group looked at me like I was a two-headed Einstein. I distinctly remember one girl saying "I'm an average college student, and I don't think the average college student [our target audience] knows words like that." God help us.

And yet: George W. Bush went to Yale.

It has gotten worse! That same girl is now spelling it on Facebook as amen80s!

I went to Mason. I wanted to go to Tech or UVA but like I said they didn't have my major. Not that there was anything wrong with Mason but it was a commuter school and I kind of wanted to get out of Northern Va.

In terms of awesomeness, this is how you rank them:

1. Virginia Tech

The other ones didn't make my ranking system.

I hear Blacksburg is rural as hell. There's the school, a movie theatre, and a deer.
