Vacation rentals, private rooms, sublets by the night - Accommodations on Airbnb ?
Else, Kayak tells me this one is around $75/night the first week of August (random dates), and would put you in Old Town, walking distance to the metro (albeit a long walk):

Wow! I'd never heard of Airbnb but am absolutely LOVING it! Thanks so much for the tip!
My problem with the Travelodge is finding a non-smoking room.
Anyway, Airbnb looks perfect -- plus what a great way to gain some well-needed local knowledge!

I tried searching for hostels in the area but came up blank so thanks for the link! It's been many years since my backpacking days so I'm obviously a bit rusty, but this will make for a good back up if I can't find anything on Airbnb. Thanks!

How close to the Metro do you have to be? There is a hotel in Vienna called the Vienna Wolf Trap Hotel. Glamourous, it is not. But it is adequate. It's about 1 mile to the Vienna Metro. We stayed there when we had fleas in our house
and it was fine. I wouldn't recommend it for a luxurious stay, but it has the basic amenities, and is in a very nice neighborhood, and you can even walk to some places. It looks like you can get a hotel room during the week for $72. That's when the rooms are most expensive in DC. During the weekend you can stay at a Marriott for that price, but the weekdays are pricey.

and it was fine. I wouldn't recommend it for a luxurious stay, but it has the basic amenities, and is in a very nice neighborhood, and you can even walk to some places. It looks like you can get a hotel room during the week for $72. That's when the rooms are most expensive in DC. During the weekend you can stay at a Marriott for that price, but the weekdays are pricey.
