Interesting, I didn't know that. Come to think of it, I know next to nothing about the bus service around here, didn't even think of it.

I live in Shirlington and it is better (IMO) than the Orange Line in access most of DC during rush hour. Going to the Red, Yellow, and Green from Clarendon or Ballston is a pain with a lot of stops and alot of delays in that Rosslyn tunnel. Also, The Orange is slam-packed with folks that got on at Vienna and the Falls Church Stations. The Shirlington buses take the HOV which avoids traffic and drops you at Pentagon, which is one less congested stop to L'enfant and three from Chinatown.

Overall, bus service varies by location, but South Arlington is generally better since it has less metro stations.

I wouldn't call it "better" but yes you can get by on the buses. Shirlington doesn't have a metro stop but it has the next best thing with a nice transit center that multiple buses transferring.
