My husband knows someone who is moving to the area. She found some apartments at 2720 South Arlington Mill Drive and was wondering about the area. Can you Arlington folks let me know if that is a decent area or should she keep looking? She's military - working in Arlington (not sure where) and gets $1674 for housing. She's single, I believe. Thanks so much. My husband told her I could help her, but I don't know Arlington too well at all.

Yep. That's Shirlington Village, a nice part of South Arlington w/ restaurants, movie theatre, Signature Theatre and also a bike/jogging trail.

Yes, that's Shirlington. It's become quite a desirable quasi-urban neighborhood over the past several years with new shops, restaurants, and theatres. Traffic can be a little rough during weekdays since it sits right along the I-395 corridor; however, there are numerous bus routes in the area and several complexes offer shuttle services to the Metro and Pentagon.

Yeah Shirlington is great. Tell her to jump on it. She'll be walking distance to all kinds of restaurants, a 24 hour grocery, dog park, movie theater, etc. Go for it!

I agree with others that Shirlington is generally a nice area, but like many parts of Arlington (and elsewhere), you can find a very nice street or complex a block or two away from another that is still transitioning. For many people, this is acceptable, but for others, they'd rather find a more homogeneous area. So depending on where she's from or what her expectations are, you may want to suggest to her that she visit the area and this complex in particular, and look around before making a final decision.

Yeah but Shirlington proper is all good. Its shiny and new. I think there are parts of south Arlington that look a little worn down. But really and truly there aren't any high crime parts of Arlington.

Definitely a nice area, however keep in mind there's no Metro access. Would be very convenient if she's going to be working at the Mark Center (which is Alexandria) however if I was working elsewhere in Arlington I might consider complexes along the orange line, even though a bit more pricey.

It probably has better transit access than anyplace else with no metro access in NoVa. Its a real short hop by bus on the HOV lanes to the Pentagon. And it has a bunch of buses going in every other direction. Its also not that long a drive to North Arlington (I dont know what traffic at rush hour on the best routes is like) and of course the bicycle options are good too.
