Does it bother you when someone starts a topic and you've responded and they never come back? Especially if you were the first and it is a very new topic? I know it bugs the tar out of me and I know it shouldn't. It just seems that if you start a topic and someone takes the times to respond you should have the courtesy to at least let them know you saw their response, even if you don't agree with it.

I know. No big deal.

Yes. I don't need someone to respond directly to me for what I've added to their thread but it is a real pet peeve if they do not come back to the thread at all when they've asked for help or opinions.

I usually stick with one-liners so I have less invested when that happens. To give them the benefit of the doubt, perhaps something happened to them that prevented their return, or they have CD memory loss and forgot they posted on that forum.

Some people just aren't as polite anymore, but, if somoene else reads my response and it helps them then there is nothing lost. If others have contributed to the thread then we have all shared a little and that makes it interesting regardless of the OP.

Yes it bothers me and I always (try) to make a point of thanking for responses (and crediting them). Sadly, we do seem to get some fly-by-nights that only have either no or maybe 1 previous post.

Yes, it does! I think it's incredibly rude. People here are taking time out of their lives to help other people (OK--or to spout of unsolicited opinions and random doggerel--but whatever). When someone gets help and never takes the time to quickly thank the people (as a group) who responded--that's just jerky behavior.

It's the equivalent of someone asking you for directions and then, once given directions, walking off without a word.

I think some of this is generational. I've noticed at work that some of the 20-somethings just don't seem to have been taught any manners. Case in point: One young woman the dozen or so of us in my department a pregnancy announcement. I replied to her something like "Congrats! What great news!" And got no reply. All that politeness requires would be a "Thanks!" (And no, there is no bad blood between us whatsoever.)

Are you Baby Boomers teaching your kids this stuff? (My parents are from the Silent Generation.)

Honestly, it doesn't bother me for this reason- if they come back too soon with a "thanks", they've essentially closed the topic. I always just assume that the person is reading the comments and taking the information to light.

No - why would it bother me? This is a fake world here - not like talking to real people.
