Hello, my first grader is really struggling with reading and even though we are doing the computer help at home, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a place to go. We live in Vienna but could drive

Thank you

Have you considered a tutor that could come to your home?

I'd try contacting your child's school. Many teachers are on an approved tutor list through the county. They should be able to help you locate one.

For a tutor, I would use a K-12 certified teacher, preferably a certified reading specialist. Also, there is probably a reading specialist at your child's school who might be able to help. They might not be able to work with your child on a regular basis, but if you request it they should at least be able to assess your child and give you some feedback and recommendations for what you can do at home. Listen carefully to these recommendations - I am pretty sure computer programs will not be among them. The teacher's child might also give you valuable advice, although with classroom teachers it really depends on their experience and skill level with teaching reading.

I used to throw away the books the teacher had us make...where we would tell them the story and they would type it out and we'd draw the pictures... I figured, if I threw away my books - I wouldn't have to read them ! The teacher struggled with me, my parents struggled with me....and then one day I figured I'd read...LOL.
