We are possibly relocating to Front Royal VA. I have two children in Elementary school (soon to be middle school). I am looking for a commutable area that has good schools. I am not familiar with Front Royal at all. We are coming from MD and my husband has been working in DC. The easier commute would be better. I don't mind living in the country but would like coffee shops, organic markets, etc... Can I find a place like that near or in Front Royal with good schools (the most important piece)?? Thanks so much for any help!!

Front Royal to DC is at least 70 miles. If that's an easier commute than what you have now, my sympathies...

I'm a little unclear here. Nothing unusual though. Are the jobs now in Front Royal? If so, you may want to consider the Gainesville or Warrenton areas. The schools in FR are not considered very good and overall the town is pretty old and in serious need of some sprucing up. Prince William (Gainesville) likely has the better schools VS Fauquier (Warrenton) area. You could go the other way and try Winchester but I'm not sure it will fit your bill. I like Winchester but it may not be modern enough for you. Gainesville is really growing and of course you have easy access to Fairfax and surrounding areas.

THanks so much! Sorry for the confusion....my husband works in DC now and may be relocating to Front Royal for work. We live in MD and he has a 64 mile commute right now. He does not want that if we have to make the move for work to Front Royal so that is why I would like to know about Front Royal and the surrounding areas Thanks for the info on the schools. That is my biggest concern

I would look into Stephens City. Schools are good and easy commute to Front Royal. My DH used to work in Front Royal as well and just got reassigned. You'll love the area! People are so much nicer, neighbors are great. PM me if you need any questions answered re. the area. Good luck!

Do you want to live in town or have acreage?

If you want coffee shops, organic markets, etc., Leesburg (and to a lesser extent Winchester) may be a better bet for you, as Gainesville/Haymarket is strip mall suburbia (albeit with organic markets and coffee shops sprinkled around the strip malls).

Warren County Public Schools was one of 12 in the whole state to make AYP as a district in 2009-10 (it didn't for 10-11 but so didn't a lot of others.) The SOL scores for Winchester City are comparable to Warren County; Frederick County will usually get a better score than the other two. Remember cities in Virginia are treated like separate counties for tax and school purposes.

Thank you all very much! Have you heard of Lake Holiday Estates? Are these mostly vacation homes or is it more of a nice planned community? Thanks!

Oh...and I don't need acreage. I don't mind living in a town or close to one. We live in a subdivision now with a lot of children on a 1/4 acre lot. Thanks!

check out Woodstock, very nice little town with some little shopping and markets (no organic market per se but lots of farms in the area). Schools are supposed to be pretty good there. My mother in law just moved to Woodstock and absolutely loves it, lots of great parks, small town feel. very nice. BUT you will not find a good food store anywhere within 30 miles, sorry
