Not sure whether to post this problem here or in the DC forum... ...

My friend was visiting us in Nov 2011 and drove my car (VA license plate) to DC. He got a parking ticket and offered to pay the penalty. It's been 11 months now but each time he enters the ticket number, the online payment database says number not found. Even if we try searching for the tickets based on my VA license plate, the database cannot find the ticket! We tried calling the phone line, but we never get to a live person!

We came across this FAQ #2 on the DC DMV Web site:

Q: What if my ticket does not show up in the online payment database?
A: Most parking tickets are written by DPW's Parking Enforcement officers. Those tickets are usually posted to the database within three days. However, for other tickets, the length of time depends on when the officer submits their ticket book. Tickets are sometimes issued by agencies external to MPD and DPW's Parking Enforcement, the most prominent being US Park Police, US Capitol Police and university police. If your ticket is more than 20 days old, and it is not available on the online system for payment, it will be administratively dismissed. However, you should still mail the ticket to DMV using the address on the back of the ticket, so it can be entered into the database for dismissal.

Now, the problem is that my friend lost the ticket (a few months ago) so all we have is the ticket number. Any ideas on what can I do to resolve this matter and hopefully get the ticket dismissed? I considered going to the DC DMV but if I don't have the physical ticket and if it's not in their database what are they going to dismiss?

Thanks,
K

Was it a written ticket or was it a printed ticket from a machine. Tickets from the machine are automatically updated to the system I think. So if it was a handwritten ticket, then that means "usually" the officer forgot to log it in the system after their shift and you don't have to pay. You win!

My friend confirmed that it was handwritten. How can I just forget about the ticket? There's got to be some trace somewhere, right?

I heard on the news that DC has some $200M plus in outstanding unpaid parking tickets. DC even had an amnesty period but only got $2M recovered. Somehow I doubt that they could track your ticket down even with the physical ticket.

So do you want to go to the DMV and pay a fine and late fee for a ticket that isn't even in the system? I mean you could just go to DC and give them money, but it sounds like DC messed up and they didn't put it in. So that means...YOU WIN!

It happens quite a bit, so I really wouldn't worry about it, especially since it was so long ago. That logbook is probably long gone considering the way DC operates....
