Got a nasty postcard from Lynchburg today about one of the local candidates. The postcard backfired (with me at least) because now he’s got my vote.

LOL there was a funny editorial about that in the Loudoun Times this week. Instead of the usual campaign signs, someone is posting anti-Barbara Comstock signs. ("You hate traffic? Thank Barbara Comstock" and "Barbara Comstock hates children")

It's backfiring--apparently it not only rubs people the wrong way but it gets Comstock's name out there. Also, it's inspiring some silly graffiti on the signs ("You hate marmalade? Thank Barbara Comstock" "Barbara Comstock hates pancakes." etc)

This is the first political season where in addition to the campaign signs in the medians of roads, I've seen the "anti" signs. They really rub me the wrong way -- it's a spineless attempt, more so because we can't read that tiny type that says who paid for that sign -- if in fact it has that on there. If you are against a candidate, find a candidate you want instead and do all you can to bolster his or her image and qualifications. And maybe that new candidate is you.

An example of this are the signs on Little River Turnpike in the Annandale area bashing Saslaw.

And I'll bet good money that after the race, those signs will still be out there. It sometimes takes weeks for the legitimate candidates' campaign teams (volunteers, too) to remove their signs, so I can just imagine those "hate" signs will last longer.

All the blogs that are created to rudely bash candidates make me think we have turned a very bad corner. Freedom of expression, sure. But wasting energy in a negative manner is crazy.

Everyday I get 5-7 flyers in my mailbox here in Fairfax County for candidates both promoting themselves or against another. I am so tired of it.

Yup I get the same in PWC. Plus today I got a call from a democrat and a republican reminding me to vote next Tuesday and to ask who I was voting for. I'm so looking forward to this election season to be over.

Is there a DO NOT CALL list for politicos that I can sign up for?

I switched my status here on C-D the day I came home from work to 22 messages left on my answering machine that day from political callers. TWENTY-TWO calls. And those were just from the ones that left messages!

Same here - I can't even count the flyers received. Not sure why anyone in their right mind would even run j/k - but to inundate us with crap just is annoying.

Hate to say it, but I agree--and no j/k from me. I actually know several of the people running for school board. We were in an organization together and several suggested I consider running too. Let me tell you, there is no way--NO way--I am running for any elected position. I can't stand the nasty game playing that's apparently become the norm.

I often wonder how people can afford (time-wise and financially) to run for school board here. It has to be almost like a second full-time job with minimal pay.

Some of these are pretty amusing. In the democratic primary for our state senate seat one of the opponents to the openly gay candidate who ended up winning sent out mailers with his wife telling us how great a guy her husband is. It was a very thinly veiled attempt to contrast the sexual orientation of the two without coming right out and saying "Adam is gay, Bob isn't". Bob lost anyway.
