Would it be wrong to say that 26 books takes up 6 1/3 shelves? 'cause that's what 6 remainder 2 is. Not 7. The question doesn't say "How many shelves would the person need if the person cannot use partial shelves?" It says "How many will they need?" They don't need 7. They need 6 1/3. The majority of my bookshelves are partially full. (cue snarky comment about how if I read more, I'd know the answer was 7).

The general consensus here is often useless and uninformed. Apparently, many have simply forgotten that learning long division with remainders was a step along their own pathways to what passes today for math competency. Now they are shocked to learn that kids still pass through this same point today???

Like the ones pointing out the fact that there are many conventions for rounding and that some people here didn't so much as know which one it was that they were using?

If there were 10 kids, then you’d need 65 shelves (6.5 each). Only beltway bandits would try to sell the kids 70 shelves.

Only an incompetent would discount spoilage (especially with kids) and order only 65.

If you are going to go that route, wouldn't the answer then be 6 1/2 shelves? Each shelf holds 4 books (6x4= 24 total). The two left over would take up half of the seventh shelf, not 1/3. If each shelf held 6 books, then the 2 remaining books would take up 1/3 of that last shelf.

(You still need that seventh shelf.)

Of course, I could be wrong. I "only" teach third grade.

You can verify for us -- remainders lead to fractions? So if the students are still doing remainders, they haven't learned fractions yet. The "half" will be correct a little further along the learning process, but not quite yet, right? But even so, there would still be a need for a seventh shelf, it just wouldn't be full from these particular books.

Ahh, sorry--I had it in my head each held 6 books. That's what I get for reading too quickly. Yes, half would be correct.
