If you've been looking for those colorful knives that are so popular this year I just learned the Sterling Costco got a shipment of Kai Pure Komachi knives.

I didn't believe it at first because supposedly Costco sold out of them, but I drove over anyway and what do you know, they do indeed have about 30-40 sets. For $29!!! Needless to say Christmas came early at Caladium's house. If you want one I'd head over in the next day or so because I don't think they'll last long.

Here's what I'm talking about:

Costco - Kai Pure Komachi 2 8-piece Knife Set customer reviews - product reviews - read top consumer ratings

If you want them, they aren't with the other kitchen items. They've been stashed in the right back of the store, somewhat near the bread goods, on the aisle that has paper plates. There's also a fancy jewelry tree stashed back there--maybe that's a hot item too?

The paint is non-toxic?

[we actually have one of these - have no idea where The Spouse got it. I do not see the utility of the colors]

I bought mine this morning, and at that time there were about 30 other sets.

Regarding the question about toxicity, I looked at a few different web sites and they all have the word "non toxic". They don't specifically say whether the colored coating is non toxic, but I presume that's what they mean. It's the same non-stick coating you find on most knives, it's just that with these knives it's colored.

Regarding utility, I think the colors are just for fun. You could argue that there is some utility in using them to prevent cross-contamination. Get a set of colored cutting boards, and use the knife with that matches that board and voila!

FYI, these are ceramic knives and the color is part of the structure of the knife itself. It may stain or fade or discolor, but it won't come off.

Nah, they're stainless steel:

Are the Pure Komachi 2 knives ceramic?

No, they’re not. Our Pure Komachi 2 blades are made of high-carbon stainless steel with a food-safe, FDA-approved resin coating. This non-stick coating (similar to Teflon®) provides the eye-catching color, resists corrosion, makes cleaning simple, and helps the knife glide through food with ease
