You also have a very nice ballpark...though they should have just left it Jacobs Field.

I agree.

And to add, baseball is my favorite sport, but I root for the Nationals and don't see it as a conflict because they are in the NL. I'm neutral on the Redskins, but root for the Caps since I had no allegiance to any hockey teams growing up.

The answer is yes - because the DC area is so transient, there are many, many fans of out-of-town teams in Northern Virginia as well as many bars devoted to a specific city's fans. It's one of the annoying things about the area.

At least since the Caps started winning a few seasons ago, we see fewer fans of the opposing teams at games than we did 5-10 years ago. I'll take the newbies over Pens or Flyers fans anyday.

WVU/Steelers/Caps

It's fun to go to a redskins game, but real easy to hate on them because of the owner.

If you ever see a tall guy wearing a Flames or Leafs jersey when they come to town to play the Caps, that'll be me...

Not all of us are "transients". Most of the people living here were born here and most of THEM are diehard Skins fans. I also run into a lot of Caps fans----not so much love for the Wizards, though. I think the Nats have some time to put in before a local fan-base evolves----maybe after their first really good season.

Of the local teams the Nationals games are the most affordable, but I find many of the people who attend the games (including some ushers and vendors) lack "baseball etiquette".

I was born in DC and grew up in NoVA. I'm a strong believer in rooting for your hometown teams, so I support the Nats, Skins, Caps, and Bullets. I understand those who've moved here from somewhere else rooting for the teams that they grew up with, but it's pretty weak when natives of this area decide to root for out-of-town teams because the DC teams are bad at the moment. Part of the joy of being a real fan is experiencing the highs after having shared the lows. Ask any Red Sox fan what it was like in 2004. The World Series championship that year was probably exponentially sweeter for them than it would have been for Yankees fans because of their long history of frustration that preceded it.

I like the New England Patriots because I love that region of the country. However, I like the fact that the Baltimore Ravens have a literary mascot and a mascot that actually has some relevance to the team's geographic region. (There should be a law against things like "Utah Jazz.") If they play each other in the Super Bowl, I won't know which team to root for.

my crazy, sports obsessed 86-year-old grandmother who lives at the Leisure Wold in Silver Spring will tell you "I will never cheer for the Ravens - they have murderers on their team!"

To which we always reply "alleged, only alleged"

My dad grew up in this area and continues to be a "Deadskins" fan (although much less rabid than he used to be) and has a lot of nostalgia for the Senators, so was excited when the Nationals came to town. They currently live in SC, though. They are both Terps fans - my mom went there, my dad attended Frostburg.

My husband cheers for the University of Texas because that is what he grew up on, and remains a Cowboys fan, too (much to my family's dismay). He cheers for the Rangers and the Astros sometimes, but he isn't a die hard fan.

I used to follow my university's basketball team, but haven't really followed them for several years now. For baseball, I grew up midway between Baltimore and Philly, so I like the Phillies and the O's, but I just enjoy baseball in general. I was brought up on Cal Ripken and Mike Schmidt. I was raised a Redskins fan, but I am pretty bitter about Danny. I'm happy when they actually pull out a win, but otherwise, don't care all that much anymore.

My husband and I agree on one team - the San Antonio Spurs. It worked out nicely that I married a guy from San Antonio so that we could all be Timmy D fans

Most of my friends who are currently die hard Washington sports fans cheer for the Caps. I just don't care for hockey all that much. I think the Nationals may start picking up a following when they start winning a little more, but the die hard O's fans still have a hard time with it.
