I think when he was young, he wanted to be a little rebelious and root for a team different than his mom - she's a big Redskins fan. The Steelers were good when he was growing up in the 70s, so I suppose that's why he chose them and has followed them ever since. I also think that kids sometimes develop a liking for specific players and then end up developing allegiances to teams that way.

I hear what you are saying, though, but at least he doesn't bounce around to whichever team is hot at a particular time. He's stuck with the Steelers for 30+ years.

Also, not sure if there was a baseball team in this area when he was growing up, so maybe that's why he chose the Yankees? I don't remember what he told me about why he is a Yankees fan.

GO BROWNS!! Maybe next year

From what I've seen, local natives in DC and MD are a lot more fanatical about the teams here than folks in NoVA. I myself am a transplanted Floridian, so if any of my home teams have a good year I'll show some interest (yes, I'm a fair-weather fan). Otherwise I'm too busy to spend the time tracking teams and watching games.

I grew up in Front Royal, VA, so (in order of caring):

UVA in all college sports, then I'll generally cheer for Virginia Tech when they've got a chance to make noise
Orioles (I'll never be an Expos fan, never. I even wore an Orioles cap to work today.)

Later in life, I started caring about the other DC-area teams.
Redskins
Capitals
Wizards

I've always thought that there are more Dallas Cowboys fans in this region compared to the other non-local teams.

We'll be cheering for the Loudoun Hounds starting in 2013...we've already got some hats! And when my kids are older, I think it would be cool to sign up for the host family program.

It's a little random but being from a city with no major team, I feel like I have no allegiance to a particular city.

Football - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Basketball - New York Knicks
Hockey - Washington Caps (just started to care once I moved here)
Big College Football - VT Hokies

I go for the Yankees in baseball but I find the sport pretty boring

Go Giants (NFL) and Yankees (MLB). Rooting for another team was a felony in my family growing up.
