Can you get a 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment in Springfield for $1200? That seems low to me.

Agreed, you're probably looking at 1400-1500. My buddy lives in Kingstowne and I think his rent is around that for a 2bd/1bth unit. It's a nice location being so close to all the restaurants and movie theater there.

Really? What seems more realistic to you? I need to consider all of this when neogotiating a salary. Again, roommates are not an option. Safe, clean and well maintained are my concerns. It doesn't have be luxury, but I'm not interested in slumming either. Somewhere inbetween the two would be ideal. Thanks.

WOW! Moving from the suburbs of the Atlanta area, I'm in total shock! I knew the cost of living was high in this area, but had no idea that rental rates would be this high! I'm so appreciative of this information. It will be very beneficial as I negotiate the salary! I guess anything below six figures and I'll be eating Ramen noodles regularly! Lol

You are beginning to understand why the vast majority of young professionals have roommates (which I know you are against). I don't think you need anywhere near 6 figures (I have a friend or two living on their own on $60k paychecks), but you will need to make other adjustments in life. When I look at budgeting calculators, I laugh at the amounts they allot to different categories--my housing % is much higher and my entertainment % is much lower. Just the way things are here.

I would expect $1500 to be around the minimum for a 2 bed/2 bath in that area. A quick craigslist perusal brings back a LOT of rentals that size in the $1800 range.

If you're looking for "cheap", there are a bunch of apartments in Rose Hill that I used to see advertised for $1400 that are fairly convenient to the Springfield Metro, though I'm not sure the sketchiness of them.

One of your bigger challenges may be finding a 2BR/2BA apartment for $1200...at least in a managed building or complex. $1200 IMO is around the baseline for an "okay" 1BR unit in an "okay" neighborhood with moderate convenience to needs and wants. Unless you're content with suburban restaurant-style nightlife, there is no convenient social midpoint between Ballston and Quantico. Old Town Alexandria might be close but you may find it tough to find something in your preferred rental range.

(Apologies that I didn't read this fourth page as I'm apparently repeating some points.)

I like the look of this place and would be willing to increase my budget to $1500-$1600 to get a 2 bed/2bath. Thanks!

Yeah actually... 1200 would get you a decent place in woodbridge maybe. That's about it. Springfield, expect about 1400 or so.

And yes, unless you like your typical lame chain-bar like TGI Fridays or something along those lines. Nothing really awesome unless you hit Arlington. Woodbridge and Springfield are a joke when it comes to that.
