Amphora is 24/7.

There was a great story in the paper several years ago on Amphora's 25th anniversary about Amphora being open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. There was a huge snowstorm in the area (Blizzard of 96) and the Pentagon was having some big meeting. But EVERYTHING was shut down and they needed lunch for the meeting attendants. Well, apparently, the ONLY place that was open anywhere in the city was Amphora. So the Pentagon sent a convoy of HumVee trucks to Amphora to pick up the food for the meeting.

ETA: Here's the article that mentions it and the fact that Amphora NEVER closes. It says they service police officers and snowplow drivers during snowstorms. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:5EIbErwB0AUJ:www.connectionnewspape rs.com/article.asp%3Farticle%3D258138%26paper%3D73%26cat% 3D104+&cd=9&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us (broken link)

Don't know if it has been mentioned yet, but the best one I've found is Metro 29 Diner in North Arlington. It might be farther than you want to go, but right near the corner of Rt. 29 and North Glebe Road. Decent food, good portions, but like most places in NoVA, it can get pricey. It's worth a try.

I just learned about The Wafle Shop on Mt Vernon in Alexandria. This place sounds cool. Anyone have any experiences here? I haven't made it over there yet, but I plan to.

I just discovered the Barnside diner in Alexandria on Duke/Little River Turnpike. I thought it was really good. Open 24 hrs. Scrapple on the menu! S.O.S. was very good. I'll be back.

The best known one in Old Town is probably Table Talk on Duke St. across from the Whole Foods and Carlyle Center. It's always been considered pretty good. It's more a 60s style coffee shop than a 50s diner.

Yeah, I like Table Talk, and I like that it has parking, too. Cozy place.
