And maybe goodwill. Every time we are dropping items off, there is dozens of fitness equipment. Not sure if lacrosse or bball equipment is there too but if it was/is, the prices are surely low.

I'm not sure where you live, but I found Play It Again Sports to have an awesome selection and it was super cheap. Only downside is that the closest stores are in Leesburg and Fredericksburg.

It might be worth it though for you -- I can pretty much guarantee you they will have anything he needs for cheap.

Some leagues have rental programs. My kids did Dulles South Lacrosse, and we rented pads/helmet in case they didn't like it. (Turned out to be a smart move.)
