I am from Indiana...born and raised in NWI, and graduated 2x from IUB.

For the record: NoVA is officially off the list, haha. I'm not really sure why they (2 different people) told me to stay away from CP, when I asked I just got to stay away. I've found 4-5 complexes in Bethesda/N. Bethesda/Silver Spring that are in my budget and have immediate availability. Looks like I'll be making the 11 hr drive out this week to sign a lease and again to move sometime soon!

They were probably referring to the crime rate in CP.

Do NOT underestimate the traffic nightmare in the Washington DC region.

Living as close as possible to your place of work will ease your life tremendously.

A lot of people write off College Park because it's in Prince George's County and often group it together with some of the bad parts of the county, which really isn't accurate because those areas compared to CP are night and day. The thing about College Park is it's really not a bad area but it has some small bad seedy parts in it. Usually the issues from College Park come from some of the surrounding parts and not necessarily because of the campus. From a college student/young professional perspective, it's probably one of the better places to live in that part of this region. You aren't going to find that vibe from a town in Anne Arundel County, Howard County and most of northern PG. If you are still interested, I would recommend posting in the MD Suburbs portion of this site. There are a few people who go to college there that know the good and bad areas better than I do. But given that you make have already found a place in Montgomery County, I think you can't go wrong either way.

If you can work 6-3 or something like that it might work. Otherwise like everyone else said, stick to Maryland, I'd look in College Park, Annapolis, Ellicott City, Columbia, or even Bawlmer as you see fit. If staying close to friends is a high priority, I'd look in Gaithersburg or Rockville.

I've lived in Silver Spring and commuted to Fort Meade for the past two years. I don't think the commute is that bad; 35-40 minutes in the morning and 40-55 minutes in the afternoon, depending on what time you leave. I chose Silver Spring because I wanted to be closer to DC for various reasons and it's worked out well for me. If you are at all interested in nightlife, seeing your NoVA friends regularly, or just not relying on a car all the time I would not suggest moving near the Fort.
