I can tell you that I have been on the Navy Yard a few times and as long as I had a CAC, they do not inspect your vehicle. I am someone that wasn't even an employee there (I was there just to pick up my wife). I'm not sure if that is what happened here, but I would assume he drove in. And in the Post they said he shoot the security officer in front of the building and took his hand gun.

There are still many key details that remain unclear. We know that the shooting began at 8:15 a.m. in Building 197. Investigators said the gunman shot a security guard at the building and took the guard’s handgun.

At Mark Center, once you walk into the building from the parking garage or the bus stop, you have to go through several sets of doors, and the Pentagon cops are right there--behind the booth and again in the lobby. I can't imagine they wouldn't see a shotgun or rifle.

If Navy Yard is more like a base than an office building, I can see how this happened, as most bases I've been on are just like what PGTVATitans describes above. Even so, you would think that the individual building would have alert security at each entrance.

I heard this morning that he took the shotgun apart and put it in a duffle bag, then assembled it in a bathroom after he got into the building. Since he had a CAC card, they didn't search him or his belongings when he entered.

Just heard this too. We were all hearing different stories about how he got in the building with a gun.

Believe me, if the gun comes apart you can. I walk in every day with my big old purse, a laptop bag, and a large tote bag (and I wonder why my back hurts!!). I'm just not sure what anyone can do about workplace violence. They can't possible search the bags of 3,000 employees. They may need metal detectors. But if an employee is determined to act out like this, it's pretty hard to stop them.

I was pretty sure, while all this was going down, that it was either a disgruntled employee or some sort of domestic/relationship violence. The building is also a bit of a maze and the shooter seemed to know where he was going.

I definitely think the security vetting process needs to be more strict, obviously.

I saw on the Washington Post victim profile page that Lake Ridge lost someone. An older lady making retirement plans with her husband. Extremely sad.

I just got a phone call from a long-time work associate that has a past working relationship with this woman. He wants to travel down to DC/VA to attend her funeral. So far, I haven't found anything but if any of you Woodbridge locals read any information on that, please forward it to me. Thanks!
