The real culprit is the condo assoc. or apartment complex. They give these towing companies free pass to tow anyone. It's a gold mine for the towing companies and I wouldn't be surprised if there were kickbacks involved. In the condo assoc I used to live in there was a tow truck driver who drove around the lots all day. Towing the cars of residents and their friends. I can understand if you are next to a metro station or a shopping center and there is a problem with outsiders parking but in most cases it's just harassment of the people who live there.

I live in a townhouse community in Lake Ridge, not near a metro station or shopping center. Each home is allotted two parking spots, plus there are about 6 visitor spots for the 30 homes on my street. These 6 "free" spaces fill up pretty quickly by people who have more than two vehicles, and then people begin to park "illegally" because they are too lazy to (legally) park on a nice, wide public street, and walk 50 yards.

So even in these type of communities, "illegal" parking is a problem.

This car was towed from a similar community, but one that has plenty of parking available. I never have to worry about parking further than 50 yards from my front door.

$160. Which is the maximum they can charge by law. $125 for the tow. $35 for the weekend.
