We're looking to redo our back patio. Our entire back yard also needs an overhaul. I say "landscaping" only because I don't know if there's a better term, but this really isn't about getting nice grass and foliage or whatever. It appears whoever lived in our house before us used the back yard as their own personal landfill. The ground is covered with little tiny plastic beads, screws, nuts, bolts, small pieces of broken glass, and other various debris. It's too small to just go around and pick up, and a lot of it is pressed into the dirt. As a result, this good-sized fenced back yard, one of the reasons we bought the home, is unusable with our small children.

We did have someone come out in the fall, and they suggested essentially tilling the entire yard and then bringing in a layer of new dirt (which should also help level out things like large tree roots that are jutting up and making the yard very uneven with lots of tripping hazards). Their plan sounded fine, but they never actually sent me the quote they promised, nor did they ever follow up with me, so they clearly do not want our business.

I'm hoping I can find one company that will do both the patio and the yard since the two are obviously closely related (the patio will need to be leveled, extended beyond its current size, etc., so it will affect the yard as well). Any suggestions? We are located in Sterling.

I'm not sure if Independence Landscaping does work in Sterling (they're based out of Lorton, I believe), but we used them for landscaping last year. No hardscaping, but they do that too. A couple of our neighbors down the street have also used them. I found them to be top notch and very professional. We had them put together a design which we were able to tweak as we wanted, and then they prepared a detailed written contract. I had two other landscaping companies out before them who were no where nearly as professional and organized. They have a lot of reviews on Angie's List as well. It hasn't been a full year, but the landscaping they did for us seems to be holding up very well.

I have used Sunrise for both landscaping and hardscaping.

We used Holloway from our patio and were very pleased. They are not landscapers, but they did some digging and re-sodding and such as part of burying our electrical and gas lines and a few other things. Not sure if they would do a whole yard, but you can ask.
