Probably the best massage I ever had was at the Four Seasons in Scottsdale. Agree with slduvall on this.

I tend to think of chiropractors as quacks, though I've never been to one (just heard stories).

The OP sounds more like a need for an actual doctor.
So are people who make ignorant comments like this.

I've been to a chiropractor for adjustments a few times. Each time I specifically told them not to touch my neck; I've heard too many horror stories on people having strokes following a neck adjustment. On top of that, I've never seen any other specialist who relied so much on repeated visits, even after the problem went away. I had to literally pry myself away from the office after the 4th weekly visit. Insurance can only pay for so many chiro visits per year, even the so-called 'Cadillac' policies will put the red light on after about 12 visits.

And, speaking of massages...if you are a participant of the Federal FSA (Flex Spending Account), you can now get reimbursements for massages. Same protocol applies: send a copy of the receipt with the name of the provider and the type of massage therapy used (Swedish, deep tissue, lymphatic,..etc...). Now, if you want to spend your extremely-limited FSA money (thank the Infernal Revenue Service for that) on a lot of those instead of doctor visits, emergencies, medication, etc... that's up to you.

Chiropractic varies from feel-good to ineffectual to actually dangerous. There is zero scientific evidence that it works.

Reebo - AGREED! I was in a bad car accident and my insurance stopped paying for phys therapy, which wasnt working anyways! A friend talked me into going to see her Chiropractor. He attempted an adjustment, and when nothing would move, he perscribed three massage sessions. She worked the muscles and broke up the scar tissue that had built up around the muscles and bones. The Chiropractor was then able to make the adjustments. So the treatment plan from BOTH of them is what helped me heal.

I would recomment to the OP that the father find a chirporactor that will take xrays first, so he can see if it is something out of place or just a soft tissue issue.

Actually there is plenty of research that proves it does. Here is just two.

“Based on one-year follow-up data imputed for complete analysis, participants who received physical therapy (exercise program) during a clinical trial attended a higher number of visits to any health care provider and to general practitioners during the year after care when compared to participants who received chiropractic care (flexion distraction) within the trial.”

Cambron JA, Gudavalli MR, McGregor M, et al. Amount of health care and self-care following a randomized clinical trial comparing flexion-distraction with exercise program for chronic low back pain. Chiropractic and Osteopathy 2006:14:19.
Proctor TJ, Mayer TG, Gatchel RJ, McGreary DD: Unremitting health care utilization outcomes of tertiary rehabilitation of patients with chronic musculoskeletal disorders. Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery 2004, 86A:62-69.

Chiropractic Adjustments Improve Brain Function
Approximately 100 volunteers were examined with an electroencephalogram (EEG) before and after chiropractic adjustments.
After receiving a chiropractic adjustment, post EEG scans revealed improvement in all areas of the volunteer’s brain function. Particularly, the researchers noticed an increase in the meditative Alpha brainwave patterns that are associated with a greater degree of relaxation, health and healing.
