We are moving from Atlanta, Ga to NOVA mid December 2014. I am working in Sterling, Va and my spouse will be working in Potomac, Md...so we are looking for something in-between? I understand commute times are incredible. We have two elementary school kids (5 & 8). Our budget is around 450k. I am searching threads and trying to get a feel for areas - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We looked at homes in South Riding, Chantilly, and Fairfax.

Welcome to the area! You might want to try to find something in Sterling itself. as it's a very family-friendly area and it's about 20-25 miles to Potomac MD down Rt. 7/495. I know it's not "in-between" but it would be nice for one of you two to be close to kiddos schools during day. You could try Reston, but your money will go a little farther in Sterling.

You are moving a family of four in three weeks and have no idea where you are going?? EEEK!!!

You really should rent, first, so you get an idea of what the area is like.

Because of the long commutes, I would try and stay as close as possible to what is between Potomac and Sterling. (Chantilly and South Riding will be an hour or more commute for your spouse.) Unfortunately, this is McLean, and only condos are within your budget. Personally, I would try and get a townhouse in Reston.

Sterling to Potomac will likely take 45 minutes.

Yeah I understand Sterling to Potomac isn't a short commute, Reston probably would be better, but it depends on what the OP is looking for in terms of housing, if the OP rents first it might make sense to do so in Reston as renting a SFH/TH is about the same price in both places.

I would look in the Lowes Island area of Sterling (20165). Lowes Island elementary is rated 9 out of 10. Almost anything in good areas between Potomac & Sterling will be over your budget (McLean & Great Falls). Townhouses in Lowes Island are going for $400k to $450k.

Your wife's commute can be long depending on the time of the day. In the morning, there will be heavy traffic until she can get on 495 North. Forget Georgetown Pike, it is generally not worth it.

Reston is probably the only option in your price range that will get your spouse closer to Potomac. I've picked the following options for you to consider based on their close location to accessing the toll road at Hunter Mill (quickest way out of Reston for spouse's drive to Potomac). All three also feed into Sunrise Valley Elementary School with a 8 in Great Schools.

11011 THRUSH RIDGE RD, RESTON, VA 20191 | MLS FX8489117 | Listing Information | MRIShomes.com
11929 SENTINEL POINT CT, RESTON, VA 20191 | MLS FX8483308 | Listing Information | MRIShomes.com
11964 SENTINEL POINT CT, RESTON, VA 20191 | MLS FX8486380 | Listing Information | MRIShomes.com

Thank you - I think renting will be the way to go since mid-December is creeping up. I appreciate this forum.
