Thanks for the replies, everyone. We ended up finding a spot in Reston, I'll be working from home at my new job! I think the wine tasting meet ups and sport leagues are great ideas. we can't wait to move in!

Good luck with your move. From what I have seen of Reston, there is a lot to do there. You should be able to meet people with your interests without going too far away.

You know I don't know about people in this area being really snobby. I will say that other areas I have lived in a lot more of the people will be more likely to start a conversation with you as compared to here. I do that myself... I don't think it makes them snobby though.

I have been here almost four years and last year I went on meetup dot com which has been great for me to meet some people who like to do a lot of the same things as me.

May be something you two want to consider.

I have a Jeep and I think it would be flat out strange for other Jeep owners to wave at me.....

My girlfriend and I are possibly moving to Alexandria/Arlington area. Let me tell you a bit about us and maybe we can fit some type of 'class' in this "snobby?" area. Our interests include:

Going out to eat once a week
camping
hiking
I'd like to get into hunting, shooting, fishing more. she's not into gunz
wine tasting! we love wine and I also brew some myself. It's quite delicious
We both love working out. Ideally, 4-6 times a week.
I'm in IT, she does marketing

We're friendly but not as social as we would like because we aren't taking the time to do so, I think. Also, we're a bit out of place. We are pretty conservative(NOT POLITICALLY) but in the way we do things. During the week we work, exercise, eat and sleep(8 hours like a beast). Also when we stay up past 10, it's like we are breaking all the rules!!, hehe. People that do the same routine as us are older and/or have kids so it's hard finding young adults(23) that like to do the same things. We are both pretty established in our careers and saving money to buy our first home when we get married so we don't make stupid decisions that end up costing us money. Not cheap, just conscious.

Anyways, thanks for reading if you made it this far! Inbox me if you want to hang out or give some recommendations about moving to the area. I know I said we/us a lot but i'm not looking for only couple friends, you gotta mix it up sometimes!

One more thing: I read how snobby nova is and a member commented on other jeeps not waving back.....that's cold dude. If I get a Wrangler, I promise to wave

Sorry to disappoint you youngin, but I lived and worked in that area for over 55 years. Moved away and realize even more now just how many unfriendly (snobby) people were in nova. It got worse and worse from the 1980s-now. It is what it is. BTW better get rid of the y'all, that will get heads spinning all over the place.

Weren't you the same person who posted about going to a high school basketball game, and the students (you included) were waving money around because it was a wealthy school, and you though you were "better?"

It's highschool aka teenagers. Also that's one town in NoVa.... McLean which happens to be one of the wealthiest zip codes in the country. If you go to Woodbridge or Burke it's nothing like that. At least you tried but you failed so you can take the sad smirk somewhere else you're welcome. You guys basing a whole region off one area or off of what you heard speaks your ignorance. Then there's some who've never been here like the OP but they know so much about the place. Manhattan is snobby in New York does that mean Queens is snobby? No.

I'm a bit late to the game but my boyfriend and I recently moved to the area and so far are loving it other than the lack of a social life. We're both in the food industry and also have similar interests as you guys (boyfriend fishes, etc and we both like drinking, eating good meals, hiking and sleeping haha). My boyfriend just downloaded the MeetUp app a few weeks ago and it seems like a great lead in finding people with similar interests, so I suggest definitely checking that out!

Private message me if you guys ever want to grab a drink!

The best way to meet new people is to be yourself. Go and do, without the expectations of meeting people. Attend your civic association meetings, go to city hall for public forums, go to church, serve on a committee, ....you get the point! Meetup.com is a good way to find people with similar interests.
