Hi everyone,

My husband and I will be moving in October time to NOVA for a job. The job will be located in Herndon VA. We are looking to buy a house around 200 k around Linden VA or Charles Town WV. From reading previous posts from 2007-2009 traffic seems horrible. Any suggestions on places we should look at or traffic time info would be much appreciated.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Madelin

Wow, talk about far away. Why not live in Herndon or even Reston?? I don't know what it was like in 2007-2009, but the traffic is bad now.

You will be looking at about 1 1/2 worth of traffic heading into Herndon from Linden or worse depending on time you are commuting. I was just out showing houses there the past few days. The area is much more rural compared to Herndon. For a budget of about 200k you will have to go that far out to get a single family home. What exactly are you looking for? Do you want city life or do you want country living and mountain views?

Thanks for the answers and help.

Blindside the reason we chose too far was mostly for our budget for a single family home and a nice back yard.

Ashley thanks for the help as well. We rather have a single family home with yard, we rather not have neighbors right next to us either. We love hiking and our space, so I think Linden, Front Royal would be perfect for us. Too bad commute time is pretty bad :/. Any other city suggestions?

What do you guys think of the boarder of WV like Charles Town?

I would suggest to take an apartment in Herndon, stay for 6 months or a year, then decide as this is a crucial one for you.

Charles Town is a nice area; not sure of the schools, though. Expect a commute over an hour AND pay over $12 in tolls each day.

I think Linden/Front Royal is a good choice for mountain views and rural area for hiking and kayaking. I would also suggest looking in Marshall which is part of Fauquier county( will give you a little shorter commute). Or look in Culpeper county in Sumerduck, Culpeper, and surrounding towns. You will have a far commute though. Warrenton and Nokesville are closer and offer land but your budget would have to be closer to 300k.
I do not know anything about Charles Town to help there.

Good luck on your move! One other thing to think about if living out in Linden or Front Royal on the mountain, is weather and road conditions. You definitely should have an all wheel drive or 4x4 to live out there.

Here is an example of what you can get in Linden for under 200K
