I have family visiting from out of the country and considering spending this Friday-Saturday at the shore. I realize that it's Labor Day weekend and therefore, likely going to be crazy packed. But of the beaches nearby (e.g. Virginia Beach, Assateague Island, Rehoboth Beach, Ocean City, etc.), anyone have an opinion on which one would be the least crowded?

Thanks.

They'll all be crowded. If you don't have reservations for a place to stay, better go make some pronto.

Let us know if you have any sanity left after driving to the beach this coming weekend.

Assateague will be the least crowded. Good luck with the drive - your best bet for a Fri-Sat trip is to leave before the sun rises on Friday morning.

Agree with JfromReston. Assateague will be the least crowded.

I heard on the radio that it's advised to leave on Friday before 7:00am or after 6:00pm because of the expected traffic volume. Also, be sure you have reserved a room before you attempt the trek or you might have to turn around and come back the same day.

Ocean City and Virginia Beach will be far and away the most crowded. Rehoboth is much less crowded. Assateague the least crowded.

I gotta wonder, how come lesser known beaches like Buckroe Beach in Hampton (homer pick I know) or Yorktown Beach (not 100% on its name but it is in York Co) aren't ever a part of these discussions? I know they aren't close to hotels but if you are cool commuting to the beach, I'd look them up.

What's the point of driving all that way to go somewhere that's not even on the ocean? You could go swimming on the Chesapeake without driving 4 hours.

I didn't realize they were real beaches...I mean I guess they are but they are on the Atlantic Ocean are they. I really dislike "bay" beaches or "river" beaches. Yuck! But I know many people don't care.

To the OP: All the beaches will be crowded and traffic will be heavy. Many places in OC/MD require a 3-night minimum. I think VA beach doesn't really do that.

I would just go to the one that gives you the best hotel deal. I think you'll have fun at any of the 3 beaches. I'd rather head to Rehobeth or OC/MD though and endure some Rt 50 traffic versus some the hell to get to VA beach.

Note that Assateague is a national park. Accommodations and amenities may be more easily found under Chincoteague, a town next door.
