Another consideration if he sees 81 is bad while still in the northern end. Take 55 west off exit 296 and a short distance up is Back Rd. Take this south all the way to Rt 42 and this will take him to Harrisonburg. Nowhere near the congestion as Rt 11 when 81 gets bad. This basically parallels 81 but on the west side. Most any exit will get him over to Back Rd and at Woodstock he can pick up Rt 42. (Senedo Rd)

I did and thank you. Glad your travel was easy.

Thank you for that info! He called me last night from exit 269 and I was trying to pull maps up and figure it out but I wasn't doing it fast enough for him. He's got 2 more years of making that trip so this will probably come in handy.

Even when we stay put in NoVA, I go back-and-forth twice to Pittsburgh to bring my elderly mother here. This brings the normal heartburn of I495 Beltway/I270/I70 back-ups in Maryland (Maryland traffic is my problem, not NoVA).

From Burke as alternate I can do Dulles Toll Road west to Leesburg up Route 15 to I70, if 70 is clogged I can do Route 40 Alt. Out of 4 trips last week I did this twice and it avoided much traffic. The problem with Route 15 is it also plugs up, so it is not always a good work around, last week it worked well however.

Hope you had a great thanksgiving! I traveled to Connecticut, I left Tuesday because I knew there would be a lot less traffic

The last time my wife and I traveled on Thanksgiving was pre-kids and from VA to upstate NY. We were engaged (1981) and not yet married. This trip was horrible, especially the return trip on Sunday. I told her she could enjoy herself as I would never travel again on Thanksgiving and have held true to my word. We live off I 81 now in Shenandoah Co but I've kept an eye on Googlemaps and it's been bad. I drove to Wal Mart this afternoon for the wife so we could have popcorn for our movie date in front of our TV.

I got one heluva head scratch for this little trip but in reality I took all back roads and had no traffic but I could see I 81 and it was indeed bad.

So who here ventured out this year?

BTW. The movie was not all that good.
Wife's family is in North Carolina so we go down there sometimes for Thanksgiving. We did this year. We make sure NEVER to be on the road the Sunday after Thanksgiving though. This year we drove back Saturday morning and besides hitting the usual 95 traffic around Stafford/Fredericksburg it wasn't too bad.

I traveled to central VA from Lake Ridge on Thursday morning. Left the house around 11:30 am and drove Rt. 28 to Rt. 29 to Rt. 15. Travel time was about 90 minutes, and that's typical.

Came back on Saturday evening via 95N, and hit some traffic there. It was slow going but at least it was moving. It took about 15-20 minutes longer than usual.
