Yes the Greenway would be pretty expensive, but your housing will cost much less then than in Fairfax County or somewhere closer in, so that might offset. Plus it balances out the commute times fairly well and you don't have to leave the house by 6 AM.
There aren't many apartments in Purcellville but there are townhouses for rent. Purcellville to Reston wouldn't be too bad but the Front Royal commute would involve Route 7 west, over a seemingly innocuous mountain. But that mountain and Route 7 can get really nasty with fog, ice and snow, let alone an accident. Very, very few alternate routes. Then he'd still have to go down Route 340 to Route 522 (I think it's 522). That could be a rather unpleasant commute.

Best of luck.

Hi Kayjpea, and like others have expressed, welcome to our area! Reading your original and some of the other comments, as a former 90-min. one-way commuter myself, and a 40+ year resident of the area, I know you're commuting alternatives. Some of what's been posted here is inaccurate.

Bigfoot424, not trying to pick on anyone, single anyone out, be a ____, or anything else, just trying to help the person who asked the question. However........some of the ideas about commuting routes and times make no sense or are just wrong, and some of the general statements about property-availability in some areas are not really accurate, either. Ok?

I am curious, too, as to which commuting data is wrong?

Agreed. I didn't read other posts but was curious what you saw. I work in FR and have yet to find Rt 7 anywhere in FR.

The Route 7 comment is mine. Someone mentioned Purcellville.

FROM PURCELLVILLE to Front Royal -- Route 7 west to Route 340 south (at Berryville) to Route 522 south to Front Royal. I didn't say Route 7 all the way to Front Royal. Only other way is down Route 15 to Route 66.
