Also keep in mind that commuting times vary a lot from Gainesville/Haymarket. For example if I leave before 6 I can be to work in Reston within 30-35 minutes. After 8 it is more like 50-60. Either way not that bad for the much newer and better housing you will be able to afford.

Good feedback Ozzy. I will likely have some flexibility in my hours at work so it wouldn't be outside of the realm of the possible to commute during off peak times. Could also find a local gym in Reston to work out at for a while either before or after work to wait out the worst of rush hour too..

We moved from NC to NOVA back in March and the prices are crazy compared to most places in the country. My office is in the Reston Town Center but I am all over DMV area for work. We (wife, 3 kids, dog) settled in Ashburn and went into a nice townhouse in Belmont CC. It was a little bit of an adjustment coming from a house on a 1/2 acre but it hasn't been too bad. Getting closer to DC just wasn't affordable or getting us something we liked with the space we needed and Ashburn has a lot of newer town centers. I personally wouldn't look any further west than Leesburg.

One thing you have to keep in mind when looking at housing here is that most all homes/townhomes have basements which makes the sq footage seem a lot more and since you don't have kids, you will be fine I would imagine finding something and not feeling cramped.

If you are wanting to take advantage of DC, it is a 50 minute weekend drive (1.5 hours weekday). My commute to the Reston Town Center from Ashburn leaving around 8am takes about 35 minutes and its probably the same if I leave around 4 but my schedule is very flexible was well. (I don't take the $6 Greenway each way either...)
