I have narrowed it down to these two cities for the most part for places to live within our budget. Found some nice rentals, and was wondering which commute would be worse coming from these cities going towards the McLean area in the morning?

I think that Fairfax City would be slightly worse. I-66 and its work around's (29 and 50) are more congested on a regular basis than 267 (toll road). Though you will have to pay tolls on 267. Make sure you put tolls into your budget, they are a fact of life for most people living in Reston.

If I can save a few bucks on tolls, and add 10-15 minutes by living in fairfax city, I might do that.

You don't have to pay for tolls from Reston; just the fastest way to go. Taking the non-toll route is probably about the same as Fairfax City, all depending on exactly where in Fairfax City, Reston, and Tysons.

I hear ya. Which roads are tolls anyway? 267 and 50/25?

267 - Dulles Toll Road - toll for all users
267 - Dulles Greenway - toll for all users (but likely not applicable to you as it runs from Sterling to Leesburg)
495 - between Tysons Corner and Springfield there is an optional toll to go quicker. (HOT lanes)
95 - between Springfield and Woodbridge there is an optional toll to go quicker. (HOT lanes)

I take 123, from FFX City, to Hunter Mill then all the way down, it's not that bad. No tolls. It does back up in the evenings, but where doesn't?

It is part of a back way to get from Fairfax City to Reston. I don't think the poster understood that you are going from either Fairfax City OR Reston to McLean.

Yeah, this is my probable commute. Not FXC to RESTON, haha.
