The commute from there to Chantilly isn't too awful (35ish minutes in no traffic, 45-50 in heavier traffic, but lots of possible routes). Then when he does start working in Springfield you'll think you died and went to heaven. Your money will go a lot further in West Springfield than it will in Vienna but you aren't sacrificing school quality, and there are lots of wonderful neighborhoods.
I think you were reading my mind. I am unsure of the husband's workplace. Perhaps Chantilly isn't in play any more.

Ah, you remember me! Yes, he will start out in Chantilly (he could be there for a few years or more). I definitely haven't ruled out West Springfield and maybe even Clifton or Centreville or Oakton. The only reason I'm focusing on Vienna is because it sounds like a neat place. Definitely bigger houses in Springfield though. West Springfield just seems like the neighborhood we live in here in Colorado. Very family friendly and we do love it. We are just looking for something a little different. We want to have a "downtown" and also love that Vienna is close to Tysons and the Mosaic district. I could be wrong, but it seem like they also have lots of local mom and pop places. Really, I guess I won't know what I prefer until I get out there. I'm just trying to ask as many questions as I can in the meantime. I keep getting conflicting info about the commute from Vienna to Chantilly or Vienna to Springfield. I checked google maps and I believe it said 35-40 min during morning rush hour from Vienna to Springfield. I have a friend who has a dad that lives there and he said that commute would be horrible because he would have to drive on one of the worst stretches of the beltway. I don't know what to believe! My husband commutes between 30-45 minutes now so we were hoping to keep it about the same.

I can't agree that it would be horrible. I also wouldn't describe it as "one of the worst stretches of the beltway" (at least not that direction at that time of day). Depending on the part of Vienna, you could also take back roads. It wouldn't be fast but it's not an awful commute.

I think that you have a really good read on the two communities and their differences. Vienna is much more "small town" and does have many small local businesses. I shop at the little cafes, coffee shops, restaurants, bakeries, chocolate shops, specialty food shops, etc. daily.

I also disagree with that statement about the worst part of the beltway. The inner loop (going north) between Braddock and Annandale gets really bogged down in the morning but your husband would be going the other way. And like the previous poster said, there are lots of alternate routes.
