Do pretty much all areas of Mclean have bad airplane noise all the time? I was in a neighborhood near Dolly Madison & Kirby around 7pm tonight, and I would say at least 15 airplanes flew over in a 30 minute period. And they were quite noticeable. Borderline obnoxious. Was that an anomaly, or is that normal in the area of Mclean near Dolly Madison Blvd?

I was also a bit further south (Kirby & Kellogg -- the Potomac Hills neighborhood) and I could also hear constant airplanes, though they were not quite as loud. Normal?

Did I have an unusually bad night, or is Mclean always like that? Any areas of Mclean not affected by airplane noise? Is it significantly less noticeable closer to 495, say near 495 and Balls Hill Rd?

Well, from this web site it seems that the general route of the GW Parkway is a flight path; so I guess it would be loud.

Thanks for the response. I guess I'm curious if it's basically loud all day from like 7am to 8pm or 9pm, or if there are busy times. From about 7 to about 7:30pm, I must have seen/heard about 15 planes. Would it basically be that way all day, every day?

The same website will tell you that. While I will do the research to find the website, and then recheck it to make sure it will show historical data over time, I'm not going to spend the time to analyze the "over time" data for you. Now you are on your own.

Yes it's like that all day everyday. Depending on which way the wind is blowing determines flight paths.

The planes using DCA are supposed to fly over the Potomac when possible; obviously they have to fly into the wind to keep up their airspeed on landing and takeoff, though. I used to live just south of Marymount, and although you could hear the planes easily outdoors, we didn't really notice them once indoors. Helicopters were far more disruptive.
