Hello,

I'm trying to see where possible IT jobs might be in around the area.

It doesn't necessarily have to be, exclusively, northern Virginia—as I'm sure there are means to get me around (e.g. train, metro, etc.)—but I'd prefer it if they were around/in NOVA.

I guess the better question to ask is:

Who am I supposed to look for? What companies am I supposed to be looking for?

I'm not saying you should do my homework for me, but a little hint would be great.

The only companies I know of are those that show up on monster and the few that I manage to find on other job boards.

If that doesn't seem like a worthwhile deed, then feel free to leave a link to a job search site that may help me out.

Thanks,

T.R.G.

Take a drive down the Toll Road. Make note of any company names you see on a building. They will have IT jobs open.

I get offers on LinkedIn all the time. If I were more interested in switching jobs, I could probably get even more. You also have the option of being in-house for just about any company or organization.

This.

Dice, Monster, Indeed, etc. are great ways to get bombarded with irrelevant offers from headhunters who are probably sitting in a Hyderabad sweatbox.

I'll use job sites to find names of companies, then look them up. It isn't tough to start building lists of outfits big enough to always be looking.

The business model in DC IT jobs is to find people with clearances and put them on government contracts. Headhunters are a disgrace. Many don't even have a contract, yet, and will package your resume in proposals. Most of the IT work in DC could be done in India for less than two bucks per hour, and the big difference would be that the Indians have actually passed Calculus. People beach about how much those on the Dole get, but are the "IT Guys" really any different? And the seven trillion unaccounted for at the Pentagon? Strong defense, yes. French white collar socialism, no. DICE gets my vote...try to screen out time wasters or you would be better off driving a school bus or delivering food.
