Macy's has included the Alexandria location as a part of their closures for cost savings this year. Macy's was an anchor store for Landmark and now with only Sears left, who is in a slow death spiral itself.

It is likely this is the last call for Landmark Mall, which is been dying for the 12 years I lived in Northern VA. I went there on Monday for a haircut and my barber said we will probably be moving.

I hope this means Alexandria City will actually do something with the location. It is prime real estate location.

They will just expand the Mixed-Use area or get another anchor. A dept store will be profitable after the re-development.

It's probably a good thing. These poorly performing anchor stores with 100 year leases are part of the problem with these older malls. I think if they can get Macy's and Sears out of there, they can more quickly redevelop the shopping area. As it stands now, they would have had to do a "Springfield Mall" thing and try to redevelop around those anchors.

Good point.

I saw this report and now that Macys is out, looks like the city can plow ahead with a Mosaic type shopping/walking center

Now That Macy's Is Closing, What's to Come for Landmark Mall? | NBC4 Washington

I really hope the new development means they will redesign safe and simple pedestrian/bike and auto access around the new stuff. Getting around old landmark is !!

It's funny how things kind of get back to how they were. For all you old folks out there, you will probably remember that Landmark used to outdoor shopping. Not quite like the Mosaic District, but they had the two anchors on each end, a Garfinckels in the middle and then all the shops. Kind of like the town centers we are seeing developed today but with actually more upscale shopping. Then the outdoor thing went out of vogue and the enclosed it and made it a mall. Now maybe it will go back to the way it was sort of.

I'm guessing Macy's was offered a nice chunk of $$ - the reason Macy's and Sears are/were there so long is they OWN the properties they are on, they don't lease. Since Sears is such a lousy store and in need of funds I'm guessing they will sell out as well soon.

I think the Macy's closure was part of their downturn announced a few weeks ago. I can't remember the number but they are closing a BUNCH of stores. Sears is selling off its Craftsmen line to try to fix themselves and I noticed they are doing a total remodel of the Fair Oaks store.

Thats not a remodel
They permanently closed the 2nd floor -except garage access and i think they have a hearing store tenant up there.
If they don't hit Jan 17 #s, they are closing the Fair Oaks locale too

Oh, interesting, I didn't realize that. I thought they were just refurbishing the upstairs.

I wonder if Fair Oaks Mall will be the next one to go. It used to be one of my favorite malls many, many years ago but it's kind of depressing now.
