My wife and I are relocating to the DC area to work at the Pentagon. We have 1 college age child so no concern about school systems. We are thinking about a townhouse within 30-40 minute commute. We like to go for evening walks; need recommendations for Where to buy a townhouse. Budget range is 620K max. Thanks for any advice you can provide.

You actually have a fair number of options at that price for a townhouse. Besides evening walks, what else is important?

Initially, I am thinking Shirlington....

I would look at South Arlington. There are more condos than townhouses, but it's a very quick bus ride to the Pentagon.

Shirlington (at the very south tip of S. Arl) would be great for you; if townhouses/condos there priced out of your budget, you could look just on the other side of Four Mile Run, at the condos and small houses there. Very walkable to Shirlington.

Cameron Station is indeed nice.

Otherwise, I'd suggest City of Alexandria.

The knock on most other areas (esp N Arlington, Falls Church, Burke, W. Springfield) is that they're in demand because of the schools. So you'd be paying for schools you don't use. (We're in that boat ourselves.) It that does mean your property increases in value much faster.

The 17 and 18 express bus lines also run past many homes in the Springfield/Burke/Annandale area if you are looking at public transit over driving.

I drive by these every day since I live in the bordering SFH neighborhood. Neighborhood is very walkable and you can catch the Fairfax Connector 394 express bus to the Pentagon less than 1 block from these TH's (or, if you prefer, drive to the Saratoga Park and Ride that is less than a mile from these).

That's true. There are nice townhouses along Old Keene Mill, among other places.

Kingstowne, easy commute to Pentagon via metro, driving or slugging. Lots of paths, close to commissary at Ft Belvoir

The older builds have cunderbkock firewalls between units. Older us better in that regard. For 425k, you can live in Daventry, built in the nud 89s and hear your neighbor walk down the stairs.
