Agree, no way this is believable.

No. You can't calculate "cost of living" accurately without factoring in all the costs associated with it. A low cost of living area isn't that low if you have to drive 100 miles to get to it 5 days a week. Especially in terrible traffic.

You have to factor in:

-Huge vehicle expenses
-The loss of 1200 hours a year of your personal life sitting in a car
-Often one spouse/partner (if coupled) is forced to stay closer to home for proximity to school or day care and therefore is relegated to a very low paying job in the sticks lowering household income from what it could be close to DC
-Aggravation, stress, etc.

Now, if there was minimal traffic, it would be a different story to drive 60-70 miles each way. That would be an hour commute; no big deal as you can do that just commuting around a few miles on public transportation every day. But we're talking about the DC parking lot here; not worth it.

Agreed. Seems like this exact question was posted before and simply isn't believable. Besides redundancy, $1/ hr isn't worth driving to the other side of Richmond let alone 2 hours each way to D.C.
